Whether you’re downsizing to a smaller home, or just trying to get decluttered and organized, it’s pretty common to be baffled about what to do with all the stuff you don’t want anymore. Here are some general ideas on how to get rid of things you no longer need.
- Charities: There are so many great organizations and ministries in the community who would love your donations! Clothes, furniture, kitchen items, books, toys and more can all find new homes and help those in need. If you know your items are going to a good cause, it often makes it easier to let go too. Ask us about our favorites!
- Giving to friends or family: Your unwanted items could be treasures for someone else. Consider giving things to friends or family members who might need or appreciate them. If your immediate family members are not interested, sometimes extended family might appreciate them more.
- Free sites: If you don’t have a way to get your unwanted items to a donation center, you can list it on a local free Facebook group, or even put it out in front of your house with a “free” sign on it. Maybe there’s someone out there who’s been wishing for just the thing you’re getting rid of!
- Selling: If you have furniture in excellent condition, antiques, artwork, or other valuable items, you can consider selling them online yourself if you’re up for the challenge. Or you can also hire an estate sale company or an antiques/collectibles specialist who will do the behind the scenes work for you and give you a percentage of the selling price.
By giving your unwanted items a new purpose or home, you can declutter your space and make a positive impact on others. Sometimes it’s hard to let go, but knowing someone else will appreciate and be grateful for your things can be very motivating and rewarding.
