A New Chapter – Helping Sarah Transition to Her Perfect New Home

When Sarah*, a vibrant woman in her seventies, decided it was time to downsize from the large home she had lived in for over 40 years, she knew it would be an emotional journey. The house, filled with memories of family, travel, and the life she had built, was no longer practical for her needs. Moving to an independent living apartment in a nearby senior community would bring her peace and a simpler, more manageable lifestyle—but sorting through a lifetime of belongings was no small task.

That’s where we came in.

The Challenge: Sorting a Lifetime of Belongings

Sarah was facing the overwhelming task of deciding what to keep, what to let go of, and how to part with decades of treasures. From her late husband’s models to years of personal keepsakes and practical household items, it was clear this wasn’t just a decluttering project—it was a journey of reflection and, for Sarah, an emotional process of letting go. She needed help organizing and sorting through everything in a way that felt gentle, structured, and manageable.

The Solution: A Careful, Compassionate Approach

Over the course of five months, we worked closely with Sarah to help her navigate this transition with ease and care. The first step was setting up a system that would guide us through the decision making process.

We created five clear categories for sorting:

  1. Keep/Move – Items that would come with Sarah to her new home.
  2. Sell – Things that could be sold to help fund her move.
  3. Give to Friends/Family – Sentimental items Sarah wanted to pass on to loved ones.
  4. Trash/Recycling – Items that were no longer functional or in good condition.
  5. Donate – Belongings that could go to others in need.

To keep these categories organized, we used colored painter’s tape—each color representing a different category. This visual system made it easy to stay on track throughout the months of sorting, ensuring that nothing was missed or accidentally misplaced. As we helped Sarah make decisions about her belongings, we placed colored tape on boxes and furniture, marking what would be kept, sold, gifted, trashed or donated. It was a simple yet effective way to keep everything clear and organized as the process evolved.

The Results: A Smooth, Stress-Free Transition

Working at Sarah’s pace, we helped her decide what truly mattered and what could be let go. We carefully packed and labeled items to be given to friends and family members. We connected Sarah with a local estate sale expert who helped her get a fair price for items of value. The process felt seamless, as we handled the logistics from start to finish, and Sarah could focus on what mattered most to her. For donations, we found organizations in the community that would benefit from Sarah’s gently used items. We also coordinated with a local junk removal company to ensure anything that couldn’t be reused was disposed of responsibly.

When moving day arrived, the unpacking process was smooth, thanks to the careful packing and sorting we had done earlier. Everything had a place, and the space felt welcoming, peaceful, and personal.
